  • Produce 70% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030
  • Reach zero carbon emissions in the electricity sector by 2040
  • Install 9 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2035
  • Install 6 gigawatts of solar by 2025
  • Install 3 gigawatts of energy storage by 2030

Additionally, the law creates the Climate Action Council comprised of the leaders of various state agencies and authorities as well as legislative appointments to develop a plan outlining how the state will achieve an 85% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 levels by 2050 and eventually net zero emissions in all sectors of the economy. 

NYSERDA seeks a creative, independent and self-motivated individual to join its Advanced Efficiency Solutions (AES) team and support NYSERDA’s work to decarbonize existing buildings. The successful candidate will develop and implement initiatives focused on supporting scalable and replicable low carbon retrofit approaches, working in close coordination with the private sector. NYSERDA seeks an entrepreneurial and tech-savvy individual to help lead the organization’s work in this exciting area.

The Advanced Efficiency Solutions team is a cross-sectoral group whose primary goal is to accelerate the adoption of energy efficiency, electrification and demand flexibility in buildings by increasing private sector investment in building decarbonization technologies and services.

The ideal candidate will have experience with:

  • Low carbon retrofit technologies and approaches
  • Understand the decision-making process of real estate owners, developers and building operators
  • Exposure to clean energy program creation and marketplace interaction is a plus

The successful candidate will help the Advanced Efficiency Solutions team reach its goals by contributing to the strategic direction and execution of the Empire Building Challenge and the Innovative Market Strategies programs.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead implementation of the Innovative Market Strategies program, a flexible funding opportunity that supports market tests of novel approaches with potential to scale customer adoption of building decarbonization solutions
  • Participate as a key member of the Empire Building Challenge initiative in the work of developing a robust ecosystem of low carbon retrofit solution providers
  • Design, develop and execute new strategies that increase market adoption of low carbon retrofits
  • Cultivate and maintain strategic relationships with leading market stakeholders including vendors, customers, trade organizations, utilities, and government
  • Work with market stakeholders to find the most cost-effective strategies to reduce energy usage and demand
  • Participate in a process to test, measure and adjust to maximize success
  • Present information on NYSERDA’s behalf at professional meetings, conferences and workshops
  • Participate in multi-functional teams to develop and direct new efforts
  • Make recommendations for improvements to NYSERDA’s strategies and business processes
  • Manage contractors and projects
  • Develop and report project status and metrics
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • 3 years of relevant experience with a demonstrated record of success in delivering solutions within business, non-profit or government operating environments
  • A bachelor’s degree; master’s degree preferred
  • Energy-related technical knowledge in at least one of the commercial, institutional, industrial, or multifamily sectors
  • Knowledge of and/or experience in the management of building energy systems
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to successfully multi-task, set priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability; an entrepreneurial edge, resourcefulness, adaptability, and an instinct for surfacing pragmatic solutions
  • Capacity to enable teams and colleagues to achieve their potential, innovate and look at a business in new ways and provide exceptional service delivery
  • Ability to build productive relationships across a diverse organization
  • Ability to drive to big picture goals while maintaining a strong attention to detail
  • Excellent presentation and interpersonal skills that resonate with audiences of different backgrounds, the ability to communicate persuasively, concisely and unambiguously in speech and in writing
  • Good computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)

  • Engineering
  • Facilities management
  • Power or grid management
  • Consultative sales, outreach and marketing to commercial, industrial and institutional customers
  • Market development
  • Supervising technical staff with increasing levels of responsibility
  • A master’s degree in engineering or the physical sciences
  • MBA
  • CEM or CEA Certification by the Association of Energy Engineers
