Director, Research & Development - Albany or New York City Office (#625)

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (“NYSERDA”) is searching for a Director of Research and Development (“R&D”), to serve as the new leader of its climate technology R&D programs. The State of New York (the “State”) has committed, through legislation, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 85% below 1990 levels by 2050. The State and NYSERDA rely on the NYSERDA R&D team to invest across a broad set of technologies in support of the State’s decarbonization goals and to inform state policies with respect to decarbonization and the reduction of other pollutants as required by the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.

The NYSERDA R&D team consists of between 10-15 experienced full-time R&D professionals that invest in climate innovations including feasibility assessments, applied research studies, product development, and pilots and demonstrations. The team is expected to deploy an additional $250m though 2025, with the majority of the funding requiring development of new programs. The existing portfolio includes over $100 million in investments, including in energy storage technologies, clean heating and cooling solutions, and grid modernization and optimization technologies. Additionally, the R&D team oversees NYSERDA’s investment in the U.S. National Offshore Wind R&D Consortium.

In addition to investing, members of the R&D team provide their portfolio and select partners with technical expertise and commercialization support. The team is also regularly called upon by the Governor’s Office, Department of Environmental Conservation, and other State agencies and authorities to provide input on the development of policy and regulations.

Assuming a return to safe travel, the Director, R&D will be expected to travel approximately 20-25% of professionally committed time to meet with team members, stakeholders and potential partners. The Director, R&D will report to the Vice President of Innovation.
