Funding Available for New Hires in Energy Efficiency and Clean Technology Sectors

Funding is available for a wide variety of positions and industries, from installers in the HVAC industry to engineers in the field of smart grids.

What You'll Get

How it Works

  1. The first step to participating in the program is to complete the business registration form. Based on the information you provide, NYSERDA will determine if you are eligible for the program. You will need to provide a few pieces of information about your business including your Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) and a description of the role(s) you’re hoping to fill with the funding. If your business is eligible, your information will be shared with NYSDOL for a due diligence check.

  2. Once your business has been approved and passes NYSDOL’s due diligence check, you’ll work with a NYSDOL Business Services Representative and submit an application for each new hire.

    • Note: the program only accepts new employees. New hires cannot start working until the business application process is complete and NYSERDA approves the position for participation in the program.
    • Businesses can bring their own new hire candidates to the program, or NYSDOL can assist with identifying qualified candidates.

  3. Upon approval of the application for a new hire, NYSERDA reserves funding for the position.

  4. After the new hire starts working, the business submits reimbursement requests through an online portal to receive funds.

Is My Business Eligible?

Businesses must provide services in the following areas to be eligible for program funding:

  1. Energy Efficiency: Lighting; Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning; Air Source Heat Pumps; Advanced Building Materials; Insulation and Air Sealing; other high efficiency products and services
  2. Renewable Electric Power Generation: Geothermal; Solar; Hydroelectric power
  3. Grid Modernization and Energy Storage: Smart Grid; Micro-grid; Demand Response Management

Maximum Funding Available When Hiring Priority Populations

NYSERDA encourages the hiring of individuals and disadvantaged communities through OJT. NYSERDA will reimburse wages for new hires from the following priority populations for 24 weeks (6 months). Traditional workers are reimbursed for 16 weeks (4 months).

Note: Solar electric companies and businesses with over 100 employees can only receive funding for the hiring of workers from priority populations through the program.

Businesses will be required to provide a cost share for all wage subsidies. NYSERDA’s cost share is capped at a maximum of $16 per hour for each hire. For businesses with 100 employees or less, NYSERDA funding is capped at $150,000 per business for traditional workers. There is no maximum cap for any size firm for hiring priority populations or disadvantaged communities. For businesses over 100 employees, incentives are only available to hire individuals from priority populations or disadvantaged communities.

To register as an eligible business, please head to the Business Registration page and have the following information ready.

The form will ask:

  • Business Name
  • Business Electric Utility Service Provider
  • Business Address
  • Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN). Your FEIN is NOT your Social Security Number (SSN). Do NOT submit an SSN to NYSERDA via email*.
  • Existing NYSERDA partnership agreements or contracts (if applicable)
  • Business Contact Person

  • E-mail Address
  • Current number of full-time employees (do not include company owners/principals)
  • Job title, job description/list of job duties, and hourly salary range for each anticipated position

Following receipt of the Business Registration form, the NYSDOL will complete a due diligence review before NYSERDA approves eligible businesses. Participating businesses are contacted by a dedicated NYSDOL Business Service Representative to begin the hiring and worker application process.

How long will the due diligence review take? The due diligence review may take several days to complete. NYSERDA will notify you once the review is complete.

My business is in one of the eligible categories. Are there any specific jobs not eligible for the program? Yes, NYSERDA will not provide reimbursement for office management, administrative assistants, drivers, or similar positions.

How soon can I invoice? The business may begin invoicing NYSERDA for reimbursement after 4 weeks on the job. Businesses are only allowed to invoice once a month for each hire.
